SEBASTIAN WIENAND, Harpsichord & Organ

It’s almost like an annually recurring fairy tale – setting aside the fact that this is an actual occurrence we get to enjoy during each Festival: For a week of relaxed work vibes, filled with countless chances for inspiration and mutual exchange, recorder player Maurice Steger and his team turn the Hotel Ermitage in Gstaad-Schönried into the ideal backdrop for the Gstaad Baroque Academy. The concert featuring all teachers has now become an annual tradition as well: In the Zweisimmen Church, just before the grand finale of Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy 2024, the audience is invited to take a musical journey through the golden age of the Baroque in Italy (featuring Mancini, Vivaldi, Merula, and Corelli), with a detour to Madrid, where, at that time, some Italian musicians, including Andrea Falconiero (commonly known as Falconieri), were making a mark.

Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) “Quella pace gradita”, cantata for soprano, recorder, violin and basso continuo “Sconsolato Rusignolo”, aria for soprano, recorder, strings and basso continuo “Più non m’alletta e piace”, aria for soprano, flautino, strings and basso continuo Andrea Falconiero (ca. 1585-1656) “La bella marchesetta” e “La suave melodia” e “Folias echa para mi Señora Doña Tarolilla de Carallenos”  Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) Cello Sonata in A Minor, RV 44 Francesco Mancini (1672-1737) “Quanto dolce è quell’ardore”, cantata for soprano, recorder and basso continuo Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (1644-1704) “Sonata representativa” for violin and basso continuo Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) Sonata for Recorder and Basso continuo in G Minor, Op. 5 No. 8 (with ornaments by Pietro Castrucci) Tarquino Merula (1595-1665) “La Strada”, canzona per due canti e basso | “La Pighetta”, canzona per canto e basso | “La Ciaccona”, canzona per due canti e ostinato | “Folle è ben chi si crede”, aria for soprano and instruments
