This concert presents a rare opportunity to hear Maurice Steger, one of the most influential recorder players of our time, live at National Tsing Hua University. Celebrated for his extraordinary technique, vivid tone, and charismatic stage presence, Steger has reshaped how audiences worldwide experience the recorder.
The program highlights the instrument in a variety of settings. It opens with solo works performed by Steger, revealing the recorder’s refined and expressive sound world. He is then joined by Meng-Heng Chen in duo repertoire, with harpsichordist Albert Mühlböck providing basso continuo. The harpsichord’s harmonic foundation and improvisatory flexibility enrich the musical dialogue, bringing depth and vitality to the Baroque texture. The concert culminates in a recorder concerto featuring Steger and the NTHU Recorder Ensemble, supported by continuo, where soloist and ensemble unite in a vibrant and dynamic collaboration. Through solo, duo, and ensemble performances, audiences will experience the full expressive range of the recorder—from intimate personal expression to the powerful resonance of a large ensemble—while witnessing how a master performer, together with continuo, brings Baroque music vividly to life on stage.
